Differences Between Aspergers Syndrome and Autistic Disorder

Generally speaking, Asperger's Syndrome is different from similar types of psychological development because there is usually not a delay in the child's language capabiltiies during the early developmental stages of the child's life. It is possible however that there may be learning disabilities associated with Asperger's Syndrome.

This serves to re-emphasize the fact that an accurate and early diagnosis is extremely important in order to compensate for the deficiencies and allow the child to grow and develop to the point where they can function on their own in society.

Some doctors like to run on IQ test on the child. While this may be interesting to note the results, the IQ score in and of itself tells the doctor little in terms of exactly which affliction the child may be afflicted with. In fact, an IQ test may well show the child's IQ to be normal or even superior, and the child may have standard language development for their age, although not showing the characteristic language skill delays that are typically associated with Autism. This confusion is compounded by the health industry's failure to adopt a standardized screening mechanism with the same sets of diagnostic criteria. At the present time, the exact cause of Asperger's Syndrome is largely unknown. Further complicating matters is the fact that the prevalence of this disorder has not been firmly established. Again, this is due to the differing sets of diagnostic criteria being used.

At this present time, there does not seem to be a consensus regarding the distinction between Asperger's Syndrome and Autistic Disorders. But there does seem to be some agreement that those people who suffer from Asperger's Syndrome and those with Autism share difficulties in three major areas. But there is less agreement about what distinguishes one diagnosis from another and this is a point of contention even amongst professionals in this field.

The main difference normally seen between Asperger's Syndrome and other forms of autism has to do with the child's capacity for communication. Those who are diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome do not experience the extent of difficulties in verbal communication that others with autism typically have. As a result, some may find it easier to interact socially with other children because of the lack of a language barrier. But not everyone buys into this viewpoint and critics can be found within the research community, as well as those who are living with autism themselves. There are even some who have suggested that Asperger's Syndrome should in fact no longer be considered as a form of autism, since the difference is marked. Still others contend that Asperger's should simply be defined as a milder form of autism since so many of the same characteristics are shared.

Another difference that may show that Asperger's Syndrome is different from autism is that people with Asperger's Syndrome will seem more aware of and interested in the social world than those people with autism. This is a huge difference and readily observable. However, this does not change the fact those afflicted still find it difficult to interact with others naturally. In fact, someone who suffers from Asperger's Syndrome must be explicitly taught their social skills and the rules of society and will often learn them best off by heart or rote.
